What is Compound Interest?

Compound interest is the interest on a loan or deposit calculated based on both the initial principal and the accumulated interest from previous periods. It's the result of reinvesting interest, rather than paying it out, so that interest in the next period is earned on the principal sum plus previously accumulated interest.

Compound Interest Formula

A = P(1 + r/n)^(nt) + PMT × ((1 + r/n)^(nt) - 1) / (r/n)

Where:

  • A = Final amount
  • P = Principal (initial investment)
  • r = Annual interest rate (decimal)
  • n = Number of times interest is compounded per year
  • t = Time in years
  • PMT = Regular payment/contribution amount
